SCADA - Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition is nothing but large-scale, distributed measurement and control system. It is used to monitor or to control chemical, physical or transport processes. ScadaBase is a full-featured SCADA software package for the Linux operating system.

Linux Powered SCADA enables the users to respond to alarms through a Web browser and a user friendly point and click interface. Users will be able to log on to local sites and perform damage control functions, or contact local personnel who can take remedial action.

Its peer-to-peer Communications function allows users to control separate areas, which share the common information across the network. Also its Real-Time Database (RTDB) directs the acquisition and processing of all information. ScadaBase can be configured to operate as a small, monolithic SCADA system with a few hundred I/O points. As the same it can also be run among several computers across a TCP/IP network as a large distributed Control System with thousands of I/O points.

Initially, Linux operating system was not as widely used due to the highly dynamic development environment. Linux platform sports such features as multitasking, symmetrical multiprocessing, virtual memory, and TCP/IP network support. Because of that, in recent years all SCADA vendors have moved to Linux and various Windows dialects.
